Back at it again . . . today Colin will get to check his two blocks for this trip, see Logan (again) and eat cupcakes. It was going to be a super lazy morning before we met up with our friends and some times that is exactly what you need even when your travel time is limited. It was cold outside but was hopeful that once the sun came out it would be a perfect day! We did stop for an early lunch at Good Stuff Eatery . . . I had a Spike's Sunnyside burger . . . yes that is a fried egg on there . . .
. . . OH MY it was yummy! We don't have this place in Texas so when I read the reviews, I knew that is where we were going. They had all these different sauces for your fries too . . . I really liked the mango sauce! Colin wasn't so thrilled but sold him when I mentioned shakes! Never mind that he ordered vanilla! We finished our lunch and jumped on the metro with our stop being at Arlington National Cemetery. As weird as it sounds, I just love this place . . . so beautiful, historic, and touching . . . maybe the fact that I now know people buried there might make it even more special. I never considered it as Sean's burial place because he had mentioned not wanting to be there . . . that made it easy but hard all at the same time. So we arrived and as we exited the metro tunnel it was amazing outside. The sun was out the wind was nice and today we were spending it with our friends! We arrived just as the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown was starting. We stopped and watched and were touched at the honor these men and women do day after day at their job of guarding this special place. The main reason we came to Arlington Cemetery was for a special behind the scenes tour by one of the Tour Guard sentinels.
Our friends had offered to make the arrangements, and I said of course! We were lead inside their office and given a very detailed history of the Tomb of the Unknown . . . so much history my mind was spinning! The facts on how the unknowns were selected down to the layers of dirt and flowers under them . . . to the one unknown that was identified and returned to his family . . was just so amazing and detailed. I mean who knew that the current presiding President stepped up to be the next of kin for the unknowns and accepted the flag that draped the casket? Makes sense since the families are also unknown. I guess it was just something I never thought about. Again, our sentinel (SPC D Johnson) was very good and knew his history . . . really a nice guy who did great presenting the history and answering our questions too. Every 30 minutes the sentinels on duty would walk by us as they exited the building to do their task and duty and the one off duty would return. It was all solemn and business as usual. I am so glad we didn't pass up this opportunity as it was one of those once in a lifetime experiences. So we continued around Arlington stopping at other places as we left for the day. It was just such a perfect day especially the weather. I even got to see some Cherry Blossoms too . . .
Our next stop was to Georgetown for dinner and you guessed it cupcakes! All day Logan had been telling Colin about the amazing milkshakes at our dinner stop, and I am not sure which one was more excited for a milkshake. We sit down at The Tombs to order and guess what? The milkshake machine is broken! We all let out a sigh and laughed . . . I mean who needs a milkshake AND cupcakes in the same hour? Dinner was fun . . . chatting, Colin showing off his card magic tricks, laughing, catching up . . . and then it was off to grab some cupcakes. Colin (and Heidi too) love Georgetown Cupcakes . . .
. . . we can't go to DC and not stop by! We both like love, love them whether they arrive in the mail or we eat them in person! The hardest part is picking only 4! We both picked 4 each . . . two for now and two to take home to Texas. Colin of course picked all four Red Velvet . . .
I like variety! I had Chocolate Squared, Hummingbird Cake, Strawberry, and Salted Caramel.
All were yummy but must admit the fall seasonal cupcakes are my absolute favorites which means we need a fall visit! Colin was so happy to see Logan and they have both changed just a bit!
We headed back to the hotel to pack for our early flight home tomorrow morning. It was a fast trip but so worth it.
