Day 11: Hubbard Glacier

I woke up still super bummed that our excursion to Hubbard Glacier this morning was cancelled.  I am certain I sounded like a broken record.  The thought of transferring from our cruise ship to a small boat in the middle of nowhere sounded so awesome not to mention the small boat would get us super close to the glacier.  I did not want to miss any of the action so grabbed breakfast and came back to the balcony . . .
As we sailed closer and closer I was not sure how the weather cancelled our excursion, because it was gorgeous outside.  I got all my gear ready . . .
. . . and out to the balcony we went and stayed for a very long time.
The floating ice was cool . . .
Colin wasn’t so sure about all the floating ice as he kept referring to the Titanic and seemed concerned our fate would end up the same.  We turned up the TV as there was a scientist on board that was doing live commentary.  Milos was really great and gave historic information and facts about glaciers and the area.  He continued to tell us that today was not a typical day and the weather was the best he has seen in years.
Since the weather was so good the boat was able to get the closest possible.  Once the captain had the boat positioned, the boat would spin around so all points could see the glacier.
You could also see other glaciers that are almost completely gone too.
Standing there was just one of those awe moments.  This was an amazing viewpoint and really stepped away from the camera and enjoyed the moment.  From time to time we would hear a popping or cracking noise and then part of the glacier would come crashing down.  It was cool . . .
. . . but then I stopped and thought that it meant the glacier was growing smaller by the hour.  Really does sort of make you think about how these huge landmarks can eventually melt and no longer exist.  We stayed for almost two hours and it was great.  I was sort of glad the excursion was cancelled now because we got the best views right from our balcony and saved a lot of money too!  And just like that we left it all behind . . .
. . . and it was snack time!  I did not really care for the snacks delivered to the cabin today as they were all a bit fishy so I went and had my own snack at the buffet . . .
I think today is going to one of my highlights of the trip!

  1. I agree - the glaciers are so awe-inspiring! We were lucky with a beautiful day at Hubbard Glacier a couple years ago, and I took a bazillion photos. Love the blue color! It is sad to think that someday the glaciers will all be gone. I liked the glacier and waterfall at Mendenhall, too -- something about the two so close together pleased me! Your cruise photos brought back great memories for me! Thanks, as always, for sharing.
