Day 2: Oh Canada! Road Trip

Athabasca Glacier to Lake Louise via Icefields Parkway
Well the forecast was correct . . .
Not the great view we had yesterday, but we did wake up to snow . . . yes, snow!  It was pretty and we were prepared with our clothing so it really was not a big deal.  We hardly see snow in Texas so it was exciting.  We headed downstairs to join our tour which was small and probably just people that stayed in the hotel last night.  We would board a bus that would drop us off to catch the Ice Explorer to the glacier . . .
We loaded up and headed out for a glacier adventure where we were driven on the glacier and allowed time to roam around and enjoy the views.
It snowed and then the sun came out too.  The weather really is crazy and changes more often than in Texas!
As part of our ticket package we were taken down the road to the Glacier Skywalk Experience which really does not have views of the glacier but the valley below.  It was okay but not something I would do again.  It was part of the ticket so we went.  A part of the skywalk was glass so you could see below which was neat.
We enjoyed watching the mountain goats and mountain sheep . . .
We were back to the car and headed back out for more adventures.  Before we left the weather was clear and gorgeous . . .
Since we are in the middle of nowhere we drove down the road and had lunch on the side of the road!
The view was pretty good too!  The drive was busier today, and we saw a lot of cars stopped so knew there had to be wildlife just ahead . . .

How adorable is that baby black bear?  It always amazes me that people get out of their car and stand way too close!  I mean that bear could be at you in no time if she felt her cub was in danger.  These were taken from the car as we all know better.  We made another stop at Bow Lake . . .
Down the road was Peyto Lake where we got out and did the hike to the viewpoint . . .  again it started snowing . . . Colin was thrilled to see so much snow on the ground and enjoyed building a snowman along the path.

The views on the hike were spectacular!
Signs of Spring in June?
Peyto Lake did not disappoint . . . wow the water is just gorgeous and the prettiest lake we have seen so far!  The water just looks fake since it is so blue.
Our lodging was a quick drive and glad to be in the same place for the next couple of days.  The Paradise Lodge and Bungalows which are just adorable and spacious!  Colin was thrilled with the raven that hung out by the rock off the back porch.
Wildlife Today:  mountain sheep, mountain goats, black bear with cub, black bear, and brown bear

  1. I was at Peyto Lake on the 4th of July in 1972. I'm glad to see it is still so beautiful - such a gorgeous color. There was snow that day and I have a photo of me in shorts and a tank top sitting in the snow! Your photo brought back happy memories for me! That whole area is beautiful! I look forward to the rest of your trip.
