It was another beautiful morning! We had breakfast in the HH Lounge and headed out of town. We rented a SUV and headed south on the Seward Highway. Just amazingly beautiful . . .
. . . we stopped at several of the pull outs to get out and admire the beauty around us! I was happy to return to the car with seat warmers! Man those sure are nice! Our first stop was the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It was a nice place that is dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned or injured animals. As we drove in three bald eagles were circling around the entrance; how cool is that? Too bad my camera was not ready! We were ready to see some of the beautiful animals of Alaska. It was cold and the road was a solid sheet of ice so we drove from place to place instead of walking. We got out to see each and every animal . . .
. . . I really don't like to see animals in confined areas but this place is treating animals that have been injured so I guess that is better. They also have a large herd of Wood Bison they are reintroducing back into the area later this year! This is the only herd of Wood Bison in the United States! Did you know Wood Bison hold the distinction as the largest land animal in North America? I did not!
While it is beautiful outside it is also cold . . .
We got back on the Seward Highway and headed north towards Girdwood to check out the Alyeska Resort. Since Alaska schools were also on Spring Break it was a bit crowded. I got us tickets to go to the top on the Alyeska Tram . . . we wedged in with all the skiers and their gear. Colin was disappointed he could not go skiing but the mention of food when we arrived at the top seemed to satisfy him. It was cold and windy and the skiing seemed much harder than what we are used to in Colorado . . . I mean it seems you are going to ski over the edge . . .
. . . so really glad he was not skiing! I was surprised to see so many kids skiing without adults. The tram back down was fast and the walk to the car was super fun for Colin . . .
. . . he loved the snow! He jumped and flopped and threw and just had a blast! It was back to Anchorage so we could eat a late dinner. When I asked what must we do while in Anchorage on travel boards or to people who have been there the one thing they all said you have to do while in Anchorage is eat at Moose's Tooth Pizza. I was like okay; pizza is pizza what's the big deal? I told Colin what everyone had said about this place and he said, "well that is their opinion!" Well, the hype is true. It was amazing and some of the best pizza I have eaten! I ordered The Backpacker which is all these fresh vegetables and huge cloves of garlic . . . beyond yummy! As Colin ate his pizza he said, "It is FACT!" Of course the Raspberry Wheat beer was pretty tasty too! It was too early to return to the hotel so we drove out to Earthquake Park. In 1964 Alaska was hit by an earthquake on Good Friday that resulted in 143 deaths. The park had signs telling about the earthquake, and I tired to read them all but it was too stinking cold! I was also on a look out to see a moose roaming around the wooded area too! I am beginning to question all these free roaming moose here in Alaska! Back to the seat warmers and to the hotel for our nightly routine, dessert in the lounge and swimming!
