Day 12: South Dakota

Our last full day in the area, and I had complete and total map failure confusion.  I sure wish towns would edit maps before giving them to tourist . . . what they call a street, label a street, and print on a map aren't always the same.  Oh well we finally got on the right road headed towards Custer State Park.
We drove the Wildlife Loop road and got caught in a buffalo jam!  I had waited for this for almost 2 weeks!  I so wanted just one to walk in front of my car while in Yellowstone but never happened.  Today was my lucky day . . .
They sure are big creatures and don't want to make them mad!  The herd in the park is about 1,300.
We left behind the buffalo jam and came across a herd of donkeys who were eager to meet us.  They were very tame and I thought I read some where they used to be used as guides but were released.
We drove along Iron Mountain Road to some beautiful views; I loved this tunnel that had a sign instructing us to 'honk' before entering.
Along the way we stopped for a picnic lunch and then to our final destination . . .
. . . Mount Rushmore!  I was expecting four heads on a big rock but the visitor center was very good!
I had told Colin all day that at the end of the day we would do something 'fun' . . . in my mind everything we have done has been fun but you know how kids think.  We stopped in Keystone to take a ride on the Alpine Slide!  We love these things . . .
In true fashion we returned to the hotel so I could take a nap and then to the pool!
