Around Town: Clifton

We have been home for a week from our Puerto Rico trip . . . like home with very limited leaving the house . . . and I was going crazy.  I woke up and told Colin to get dressed we were getting out of town today.  I have been wanting to go visit the Bosque County Museum because they have a special exhibit about Texans in World War II.  I am not sure he was so thrilled but did perk up a bit when he heard WWII.  So we hopped on Highway 6 North headed for Clifton, Texas.  I was impressed with the museum . . . for a small town the displays were very nice and professional.  There were three main parts to the museum.  The first being all about the Horn Shelter.  Of course, I had zero clue what this was but left fascinated.  The Paleo American site found in Bosque County and called the Horn Shelter has been replicated at the museum for visitors. The 600 sq foot exhibit depicts a portion of the Horn Shelter and portrays the burial of a man and small girl as it took place 11,200 years ago. A second section of the exhibit is a facsimile of the excavation of the Horn Shelter complete with the tools used at the site and a plat of the excavation area.
Just amazing that this is so close to where we live . . . who knew?  The second part of the museum documents the Norwegian Immigration to Texas and the early settlement of the Norse Community in the Bosque County.  Again, the displays were so nice . . . I really loved all the painted wares . . .
The final part was the special exhibit was called G is for GUTS:  The stories of Texans in WW II.  It was nice and Colin enjoyed looking at the weapons.  My favorite part was the war posters . . .
Another thing I learned is that Clifton, Texas was the home of Pat Olsen . . . name might not mean much to most people, but he played baseball at Texas A&M and the baseball stadium, Olsen Field, is named after him!  I had no clue . . . was nice to see the A&M, WWII, and hometown boy connection.  It was time to eat lunch so we head to Bunkhouse BBQ.  Now any normal day, Colin would turn his nose up at the suggestion of BBQ, but for some reason he ate a sliced brisket sandwich . . . this never happens.  We took a little detour for a sweet treat and headed to McGregor for a cupcake at Cuppiecakes.  Yummy, yum, yum!  Since we were so close, we headed to my parents' house so Colin could go see his ducks and chicks . . .
It was a great day!  We really must do this more often.
