Day 12: Boston

Today is the day to walk the Freedom Trail.  We get an early start since we know it will be a long day and probably hot too.  I stopped by the visitor's center to purchase a guide book . . . a must if you want to know what you are looking at other than a building.  It was only $7 and worth every penny.  I was so excited about walking the entire Freedom Trail today . . . not sure Colin or my parents knew what they were in for but everyone was glad to be out of a car . . . we would be walking the red line on the map below which starts at Boston Common and ends at USS Constitution . . .
So on to the walking . . . some of my favorite stops . . . State House . . . such a bright gold dome!
Granary Burial Grounds . .
Back on the Freedom Trail.  Faneuil Hall . . . go inside to the second floor . . . amazing and no one was there except a Park Ranger . . . just beautiful . . .
The Old North Church with Paul Revere . . . One if by land, Two if by sea . . . the rest is history!
Copp's Hill Burying Ground . . .
As odd as it might sound, we did think the burying grounds were amazing.  It really was very simple to make sure you were staying on the Freedom Trail . . . just follow the brick path and brass plates . . .

I loved all the old bricks on the building . . . so many sizes and colors . . .
Bunker Hill Monument . . .
. . . no one wanted to climb the steps to the top.  I was willing to if Colin wanted but he was about done walking for the day.  I was a little bit disappointed.  We were hungry so stopped and had lunch at Decca which is near the USS Constitution and really one of the only options in the area.  You could not get on deck of the USS Constitution until 2pm so we had time to sit and relax.  I must say the sandwiches were very good even if the service was slow.  The upside was we sat outside and watched them work on USS Constitution also known as Old Ironsides . . .
. . . dry docked to make repairs but thankfully we were still able to get on the top deck to look around.  They say the Freedom Trail is only 2.5 miles long . . . it sure did feel a lot longer especially as we crossed the Charlestown Bridge.  No matter how long, we were done walking so took a water taxi shuttle back to Boston.  It was the best $10 we spent all day!  We made the quick walk back to Faneuil Hall to relax and hang out.  Colin enjoyed playing the games they had set out for anyone to enjoy . . .
We were all so tired that we grabbed a pizza from Regina's at one of the inside food markets before heading back to the hotel to relax.  The walk back seemed to take forever.  We must have looked lost because three people stopped to ask us if we needed help finding our way.  For once, I knew where we were and where we were going, but people were so friendly.  Freedom Trail was worth our time!

  1. The whole Freedom Trail is a long walk! I've always loved it, and have done some pieces of it several times (remember, I am from Maine). And Faneuil Hall! LOVE going in there for something to eat! Oh, I haven't been to downtown Boston in several years, and now I really miss it! We (girlfriends, and Dan and I) used to go just for a day trip as we were about two hours away -- shopping, eating, exploring. It is a great city! I'm so glad you got to see it! You do plan the BEST trips!
