Day 7: Nanortalik Greenland

Well good morning GREENLAND!
I woke up to beautiful weather and by beautiful weather I mean we are able to take the tender boats to shore!
I cannot wait to step foot on Greenland!  Nanortalik is the most southern town in Greenland.  Nanortalik is the 11th largest town in Greenland with a population of about 1,200 people.  Nanortalik means Place of Polar Bears.  No, we did not see one.
Hey iceberg you are in our parking spot. Apparently, the iceberg is blocking our ship’s closer access to port but isn’t that a pretty cool view.

I had booked a small boat iceberg tour!  Our boat was 6 people and a local guide.  The small boat allowed us to get so close we could touch the icebergs.  Yes, it was pretty cool!  You cannot imagine how many photos I took of icebergs because it was just something that I do not see very often.

You do not realize how massive the icebergs are until you are up close.  The boats in the photos below are so tiny!
The guide told us about 90% of an iceberg is underwater.  The aqua color in the photos below is part of the underwater iceberg; the water is so clear.  I asked our guide (early 20s) if he ever got tired of seeing them and he quickly said never.  I feel the same way!
I think of Nanortalik as more of a village than a town.  It is very compact and you can walk everywhere which is what I did.  It is cloudy and foggy with a temperature of 35.  It really could not be more perfect.
I went to the Nanortalik Outdoor Museum which was well worth the $10 and my time.  There were several buildings with displays of the history of the island and its people; did not take one single photo.  Honestly, I was just happy walking around with no plans!
The house are all painted bright colors which I did not take photos.  The only white building I saw was the church.
As I was waiting in line to tender back to the ship, there were some local kids singing songs.  They were just adorable and so funny!
I think this might be one of the top places I have visited.  Seriously, not because it was grand or had fancy places but because it was rustic, off the beaten path, and just amazingly beautiful.  I could sit and watch those icebergs all day but not in the winter!
Baaj Greenland!
