Berlin Review

Berlin is a huge city; I think I said that already . . . wasn't thinking it was going to be so big but it was and of course we only did a small portion of what the city has to offer. It was a great visit!

I just LOVED seeing these two guys when we crossed the street . . .
. . . they are called Ampelmännchen. It goes back to the days of when Berlin was a divided city. Prior to the German reunification in 1990, the two German states had different forms for the Ampelmännchen, with a generic human figure in West Germany, and a generally male figure wearing a hat in the east. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Ampelmännchen acquired cult status and became a popular souvenir item in the tourism business. Yep, I too bought a souvenir with this cute little guy!

I also fell in love with the Trabant Cars . . . no real photos but here is one in the DDR Museum that you could get into and 'drive'.
. . . Colin had fun and he looked about the right size as they are tiny. I think they are just adorable and think it would make a fun second car! Here is a better photo and information about them.

My favorite thing we did in Berlin was the visit to the Reichstag (German Parliament Building) . . .
. . . here it is in Legos of course! It was pretty cool to see the city of Berlin in the millions of tiny blocks! It was a great tour (free and prearranged) and a fast way to get to the top without standing in the line! I guess you get the point by now, LOL.

We leave this great city to head to our old stomping grounds for a couple of days before heading back to Texas.

  1. I love reading about your trip to Germany. How great that you decided to go and booked your trip just like that! My husband is being deployed to Kosovo, and hopefully we will get to meet in Germany. Having never been there, I need all the information I can get. All the history and the differences between Germany and America is so fascinating.
