It was an early morning considering the late night before, but we managed to get up and out the door by 930! Our first stop was to be the Colosseum but the line was unbelievably very l-o-n-g and for the fact we could not really figure out where it started. I remembered reading that if you walk 200 meters down the street you can buy a combo ticket for the three (Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum) which is what we wanted. In fact that little tidbit of info saved us a lot of wait time as it only took about 15 minutes compared to probably over an hour. We got our tickets and began to explore Palatine Hill and within 5 minutes I heard, "Mom, where is the exit?" Seriously, it was going to be a long day if this was the attitude of Colin. I know he was tired but come on! We wandered around the Roman Forum and Colin finally became excited as he would always find these fountains and stick his hands in them. Once I found him doing this . . .
. . . and was just waiting for him to get sick. I told him it was not drinking water but we always saw someone filling up their water bottles. It was super cold so I never minded his cold hands touching me. Speaking of being hot, it was in the low 80s, and I thought I was going to melt. Okay you people home in Texas stop your laughing as I know you are hitting 100! As we exited the Roman Forum we snapped a photo in front of the Arch of Titus . . .
. . . and then took a lunch break. It was decided to go to Virtual Rome to see the movie before we hit the Colosseum. The thinking was maybe if Colin saw the movie first then he would make the connection once inside. Logic isn't something a six year old understands, LOL. In my opinion, the Virtual Rome was overpriced but Colin seemed to enjoy it and so guess it was okay . . . the special effects and 3D movie were neat and at the end got to dress in this gladiator get up.
The Colosseum was still beautifully amazing as it was five years ago. We were close to the exit when I saw this . . . I don't think he is bored at all, LOL.
We then caught the Metro to get a look at the Spanish Steps . . . yep that is about you do is look at them and all the people hanging out. It was almost 2 and gelato was calling my name! Well, get this . . . five scoops cost 25 euro! I about chocked but it was pretty good! Since we really did not want to go back to the B&B, we started walking towards the Trevi Fountain. Colin loved this place and well so did I. There is something about water that is just relaxing . . .
Our walk then too us by the Pantheon with a final stop at Piazza Navona for dinner. While I am not a soccer fan, we ate dinner sitting outside in the piazza while watching the US play Slovenia on a big screen TV. Colin then decided he needed to feed his 'friends' so off he went with some bread and quickly had a flock of pigeons all around. After dinner, Colin said he wanted to go back to the Trevi Fountain so off we went . . . while sitting there I played with my camera's zoom . . .
Of course we had to taste more gelato which was only 2 euro a person which was really cheap compared to earlier in the day! It was time to call it a day so we caught the Metro back to the B&B for some rest! It was a long day but tomorrow we to another country.
Colin's Photo of the Day
I thought I would post a photo each day that Colin takes with his own camera . . . you always see it around his neck in most photos . . . trust me he takes hundreds each day but most are of birds and emergency vehicles . . . but once in a while he takes one that isn't so bad!

Excellent picture Colin! It looks like a postcard! Heidi- I remember going to the Forum with Laura before we left Europe in 2004 - by that time she was so tired of looking at things that while I was excited about the spot where Julius Ceasar was killed, she replied "it looks like a pile of rocks to me." Kids are funny - but they remember all these wonderful places!
ReplyDeleteWe are planning a big trip to Europe in 2 years and I worry about how my kids will react. (By then they will be 16 and 14.) I don't want to be fighting with them the whole time to get them out of the hotel room...
