Jamestowne, Virginia

Our first stop of the day is Historic Jamestowne (not to be confused with Jamestown Settlement).  This is the original site in North American of English colonization and today is under the control of the National Park Service.  I got off the main road and decided to drive on the Colonial Parkway which is a very scenic 23 mile drive connecting Jamestowne, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.  It was worth the slower pace and amazing views . . .
. . . and we did not meet one single car!  So worth the detour.  We arrived at the visitor's center and watched the orientation film.  Colin picked up his Junior Ranger book (he was thrilled) and off we went to explore!  It wasn't that crowded so we enjoyed exploring the grounds . . .
The old buildings were really neat and amazing considering how long ago some were built . . .
A statue of John Smith . . .
. . . we were unable to get a photo of the Pocahontas statue as they were doing excavations in that area.  It was interesting watching them work and uncover the layers of Earth to expose artifacts.  The old church was simple inside and out but beautiful.
We continued to walk around the grounds and watched some of the many geese that live on the settlement.
It was time to move on to the next site so Colin finished up his Junior Ranger booklet . . .
. . . and of course he loved the cannon!

NEXT STOP:  Yorktown Battlefield
