Yorktown, Virginia

It was back on the Colonial Parkway for the drive to Yorktown Battlefield.  Again since it was early the lack of traffic was great . . . just beautiful scenery.  We again watched the introduction film at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor's Center before setting out to explore the actual battlefield.  The park is best to tour by car since it is so spread out.  The map they gave us was good and gave an explanation of each stop.  The redoubts were well preserved and honestly I don't know how they managed to battle in such open spaces.
At several stops we saw these beautiful purple flowers . . .
They are called Yorktown Onions and so pretty.  Colin loved getting out of the car and exploring the redoubts with cousins Sam and Megan . . .
We all got back into the car and continued to explore the battlefield.  Of course Colin loved all the cannons.
Again, he completed his Junior Ranger booklet . . .
It was time for a late lunch so we headed to nearby Williamsburg.  About the time we got back on the Colonial Parkway a huge rain storm hit and it was difficult to see the roads.  We had a nice lunch at Second Street Bistro.  When we walked in Colin immediately noticed the desserts.  If I heard it once, I heard it a million times, but Colin wanted the chocolate cake all for himself . . .
. . . yes, it was big enough for three people but he wasn't having any part of sharing.  Again we headed to our hotel in Williamsburg and the family headed back to Virginia Beach.  We got settled in the hotel but headed out to explore.  We didn't go anywhere of historical significant (shocking I know) but all fun.
And about 2 minutes before the bumper cars ended the bottom fell out of the big, dark clouds again!  We ran to the car and made our way back to the hotel to relax and swim!

NEXT STOP:  Historic Williamsburg
