Washington, DC day 2

The weather yesterday was just beautiful and today has started off sort of overcast . . . but I'm optimistic. We had a reservation for a tour of the Capitol at 10:50 so we headed to the Metro . . . we had to walk way fast to make our time. Of course I am sweating that they might not let us in if we are late because that is how the 'rules' appear on the website . . . and we are traveling light as it says no backpacks are allowed either. I'm sure you know where this is going . . . let me just say this. The 'stand-by'/'we did not make reservations line' was getting on tours before those with reservations . . . nice! Oh and there are people with backpacks too. I am a rule follower and if it says no backpacks then well no backpacks . . . and if it means you have to turn someone away then well you do it and tell them to read the rules next time! So we watch the introduction movie which was nice and then they divide us into smaller groups of about 30 . . . I just can't complain enough so will say little. Our tour guide sent us to our meeting point with another lady so he could take the elevator? I don't know that but he did not walk with us like the other guides. I hate being harsh but the tour was probably the worst tour I have even been on . . . EVER! It was SO boring and poor Colin was very good and cooperative. It is too bad we couldn't go on our own because all we basically did was go from area to area . . . at one point the tour guide said, "Let's see if you can name all these statues." Hmmm, I did not come here to play a game; I came here to learn something. It was luck of the draw on guides and we scraped the bottom of the barrel.
We then met our friend at the Pentagon for lunch . . . the restaurant inside was yummy . . . the mac and cheese was the best! Seriously, it was made from scratch! We did a quick walk to his office and saw an office of an important person. Since the weather was so nice, we decided to stay in town a few more hours and do some exploring . . . it would have been nice to have my backpack but we made do . . . we walked around Arlington Cemetery and made a stop at Section 60, where most of the soldiers from the current war are buried . . . . . . the leaves were beautiful but it was sad knowing there were funerals taking place. We sat at the Tomb of the Unknown for a bit . . . thought about life.
. . . we then took a long walk to the Lincoln Memorial just as the sun was starting to go down . . . pretty!
. . . and then the Vietnam Memorial . . .
I tried to explain to Colin that each name was a soldier killed . . . I think he understood and all I could think about was some day would there be something in DC with his father's name? Colin noticed a man feeding the squirrels so we joined the fun . . . they were vicious and hungry . . . Colin loved feeding them . . .
. . . the Korean Memorial . . .
It was very dark and Colin told me that they all looked so scared . . . I'm sure they were. We found a cab and it was so warm inside . . . we headed to the Metro to catch a ride back home for the night.
